About This Guide

African American Studies is the interdisciplinary study of the cultural, legal, psychological, economic, and social conditions of peoples of African ancestry in the United States, past and present.

At IU South Bend, we are pleased to offer a minor in African American Studies. Other branches of Indiana University, including IU Bloomington, IU Northwest, and IUPUI also offer African American Studies majors or minors.

Students from all disciplines take full advantage of the IU South Bend African American Studies minor, regardless of race, nationality, or ethnic background. While the focus of the minor is on the Black experience in the U.S. and the ways African Americans have helped shape United States history and culture and continue to transform it today, it is also designed to foster a fuller appreciation and understanding of all cultures.
